The form of bratina is an ancient type of ceramic utensils used by Slavs in everyday life and for ritual purposes. Russian bratinas made from precious metals were mentioned first in written form in the 16th century. Bratinas were very popular in the 17th century. Using the contrast between a smooth silver surface and a gilt one decorated with engraved floral ornament was typical for Moscow silversmiths of the 17th century and their customers. An inscription running along the rim of bratina is a wish of "good health".
