Chalice (Potir)
Potir is a Greek name for communion cup of the Orthodox Christians. It is used during Eucharist one of the main sacraments. This chalice made in 1795 is a sample of classical style in Russian jewellery, a precious ritual artwork. Bright, colorful enamel used by the craftsman made this chalice more decorative and expressive. Enamel paintings representing scenes of Christ's Passions (on the support) and "Deesis" (on the cup), decorate a ritual object, but are executed in tradition of laic painting close to portrait enamel miniature, the interest to which was manifested during all the 18th century. |
