Services made of precious metals were expensive gifts commemorative an event and were family relics passing by right of succession. Services were frequently completed with extra items with the same ornament. From the second half of the 19th century with the development of the "Russian style" decoration of precious artworks with architectural monuments became fashionable. Moscow Kremlin Cathedrals, St.Basil the Blessed and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior were especially popular. Since 1865 V.S.Semyonov has been owner of a silversmith workshop specialized in artworks decorated with niello engravings and ornaments. He took part in art and industry exhibitions and won prizes. The service includes items made in 1884-1893 by the firms of P.Ovchinnikov, V.Semyonov and M.Semyonova. Since 1896 M.S. Semyonova has been the owner of a silversmith workshop (founded by his father Vasily Semyonovich Semyonov in 1852) active until 1917. In 1905 the firm employed 100 craftsmen. |
