Alexander II Nikolaevich (1818-1881) — Emperor (1855-1881). Elder son of Nicholas I. Married (1841) to Maria Alexandrovna, nee princess of Hesse-Darmstadt (1824-1880). Children: Alexandra (1842-1849), Nicholas (1843-1865), Alexander (1845-1894), Vladimir (1847-1909), Alexei (1850-1908), Maria (1853-1920), Sergei (1857-1905), Pavel (1860-1919). During the 1860s and 1870s conducted a number of essential reforms for modernisation of Russia — a peasant reform, a reform of local and municipal administration, of judicial and military systems. Assassinated by a terrorist in St. Petersbug on 1 March 1881.
