Russian vanguard art (1910-1930’s) is very popular among people in the west. State Museum and exhibition center ROSIZO has organized more than 10 exhibitions on Russian art of the first half of the 20th century. One of the most successful projects was the exhibition held in Solomon Hehenhiem museum called Amazons of vanguard. The exhibition was the first ROSIZO project that covered some aspects of problems of genders. There were many fine art pieces made at the beginning of the 20th century illustrating problems between the sexes.

Symbolism and modern art emphasized fatal and tragic confrontation of the sexes. Vanguard graded the confrontation and differences between sexes as it replaced symbolism. Vanguard heralded equality and cooperation of the sexes. This initiated flowering of art of women. Female artists (lets call them Amazon artists of vanguard) were trying to suppress their essence of women in their creative work. They also had more challenging approach to art rather then men did.

Amazon-artists were lovers and wives of artists-men. Gender exhibition illustrates problems and conflicts that were caused by such relationships. The exhibition presents Russian vanguard paintings from collections of Russian museums — paintings by spouses N. Gancharova and M. Larionov, V. Stepanova and A. Rodchenko, N. Udaltsova and A. Drevin, V. Pestel and L. Zhegin.

The exhibition examines mutual art influence of both partners the artists; their search for new creative approaches.

Nataliya Goncharova and Mikhail Larionov — 2 outstanding figures of Russian vanguard had a remarkable relationship that had impact on their creative work. The artists exchanged their experience and inspiration. Style of their works was sometimes either very similar or very different, so art experts are still not sure who actually painted several pictures.

Varvara Stepanova and Alexander Rodchenko were deeply in love with each other, however they partly influenced each other’s creativity.

Relationships between Nadezhda Udaltsova and Alexander Drevin, Vera Pestel and Lev Zhegin changed art style of Udaltsova and Pestel — these talented women stepped into new creative life with the gifted artists they loved.
